It was the early 1970s and the Golan Heights had been in Israel’s possession for several years. Day trips were becoming more popular and my family decided to rent a car and see this beautiful area. If only GPS technology had been available then!.

Regrettably we got lost; extremely lost. Night set in, we were low on gas, eight of us, clearly Jewish, crammed into a rental car with no idea where we were. Eventually we located a small Arab town, obviously part of Syria not too long ago. Yet if we were aware of its existence more than likely we would have reached for our pepper spray guns.

Fortunately, the people of the town were incredibly helpful, kind and concerned. That wasn’t always the case in those days. The people opened up their one and only gas station in the area, filled us up with fuel, gave us food, in addition tp extremely good direction. In other cases the situation could have turned out much worse. However we were very lucky. These days no one needs to face that type of situation; as long as they have access to a GPS.

How Does a GPS Function?

Global Positioning System satellites revolve overhead, beaming down signals to equipment on the ground such as a vehicle installed GPS receiver. The receivers are totally unreceptive, as they cannot transmit. By distinguishing which satellite is supplying which signal, the unity can then triangulate its virtual position. When combined with mapping software it can let you know, with reasonable accuracy, where you are at any given moment.

Employing a GPS While Traveling

If you are unsure about purchasing a GPS, but you like to go on road trips on a consistent basis, there are many why you should own one to bring along, even though you may not utilize it all the time.

First: You will inevitably end up in places you don’t know. That is kind of the point of going on a road trip. With a GPS you are certain to arrive at your destination, even at night, even if it involves odd turns, even if – well, you get the idea.

Second:  You don’t have to pull over, take out your maps, and reread them constantly. Your GPS should be proficient enough to give commands out loud, which means that you can focus on the road while driving. All that you are required to do is enter the address of your destination and you’re set to go- if however the GPS voice bothers you, you can easilt turn it down until you get to where you need to go.

Thirdly: You will stop making any wrong turns ultimately ending up in an area where you will instantly think to yourself - “why didn’t I buy a tazer?”.

Easy to install, helpful to have along, GPS devices have made travel safer and more accurate – and they just keep getting better.
